Torn Seals Could Jam Airplane Landing Gear, FAA Panics

Published Date: 1/8/2025

Rule

Summary

If you fly or work with Airbus Defense and Space CN-235 planes, listen up! The FAA found a problem where torn seals can jam emergency gear cables, which is a big safety no-no. Starting February 12, 2025, owners must regularly check and replace these parts to keep flights safe—so plan for some inspections and fixes that might cost time and money.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory Inspections and Part Replacements

If you own or operate an Airbus Defense and Space CN-235 (models CN-235, CN-235-200, CN-235-300), you must follow repetitive inspections and corrective actions for damaged bulkhead seals and retainer rings, and repetitive replacement of affected parts as specified in EASA AD 2024-0054. These requirements are effective February 12, 2025, and apply to all CN-235 airplanes certificated in any category.

Small U.S. Fleet Affected; Per-Repair Cost Estimate

The FAA estimates this AD affects 10 CN-235 airplanes on the U.S. registry. The FAA estimates an on-condition action (if needed after inspection) costs about $535 per airplane (2 work-hours x $85 = $170 labor plus $365 parts).
