Summary

The U.S. Department of Commerce found that Interfor Sales & Marketing Ltd. is connected (cross-owned) with four other Canadian softwood lumber producers/exporters already under special duties. This means these companies will be treated as one group for trade rules starting January 8, 2025. If you’re in the lumber business, this could affect how much duty you pay or when you pay it, so keep an eye out and get ready to comment!

Preliminary Cross-Ownership Finding for Canadian Lumber

On January 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce preliminarily found that Interfor Sales & Marketing Ltd. (ISM) is cross-owned with Interfor Corporation, EACOM Timber Corporation, Chaleur Forest Products Inc., and Chaleur Forest Products LP under the countervailing duty (CVD) order on certain softwood lumber from Canada. Commerce says the current cash deposit requirement will not change as a result of this preliminary determination, and these companies are already receiving the same cash deposit rate assigned to non-selected companies. Commerce will accept comments and issue final results of the changed circumstances review within 270 days after initiation.
