U.S. Finance Pros: Quarterly Foreign Deal Reports Due

Published Date: 2/28/2025

Notice

Summary

If you’re a U.S. financial services provider working with foreign clients, you’ll need to fill out the BE-185 survey every quarter. This survey helps the government track how money moves in and out of the U.S. financial world, shaping smart economic decisions. You’ll have 30 days after each quarter to report, with a bit more time—45 days—after your fiscal year ends.

Analyzed Economic Effects

5 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory BE-185 Reporting for Large Firms

If you are a U.S. financial services provider and your combined reportable sales to foreign persons exceeded $20,000,000 during the previous fiscal year (or are expected to exceed that amount this fiscal year), or your combined reportable purchases from foreign persons exceeded $15,000,000 during the previous fiscal year (or are expected to exceed that amount this fiscal year), you must complete the mandatory BE-185 quarterly survey.

Estimated 10-Hour Burden Per Response

The Office of Management and Budget approved an average public reporting burden of 10 hours per BE-185 response. Because the survey is quarterly, each required filing will carry this estimated 10-hour preparation time.

Quarterly Filing Deadlines: 30 and 45 Days

You must file BE-185 reports within 30 days after the end of each fiscal quarter, except that for the final quarter of your fiscal year the report is due within 45 days.

BEA Will Notify Who Must Report

BEA will mail specific reporting notices to U.S. persons required to complete the BE-185. If BEA does not contact you, you have no reporting responsibilities for this survey.

Multiple Submission Methods Included

You may submit BE-185 reports electronically through BEA's e-file system at www.bea.gov/efile, or download the form from www.bea.gov/ssb and submit by mail or fax as instructed.
