Tribes Can Request Repatriation Starting 2026

If you are a member of the Kaw Nation (Oklahoma), the Nez Perce Tribe, or a lineal descendant, you may request return of three Native American individuals' human remains and 30 associated funerary objects found in Leavenworth County, Kansas. Repatriation may occur on or after January 16, 2026; send written requests to Dr. Nicole Klarmann, Kansas State Historical Society, 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099 or email kshs.nagpra@ks.gov. If competing requests are received, the Kansas State Historical Society will determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation.
