Summary

The State of Alaska wants the federal government to officially say it doesn’t own the underwater lands beneath parts of the Goodnews River System. This change affects local waterways east of Goodnews Bay and could clear up who controls these lands. People have until February 6, 2026, to share their thoughts before a decision is made after April 7, 2026.

Federal Disclaimer of Goodnews River Lands

The State of Alaska asked the Bureau of Land Management to officially disclaim the United States' interest in submerged lands under parts of the Goodnews River System, including Goodnews River and Lake, Igmiumanik River, the South Fork of the Goodnews River, Tivyagik Creek and its unnamed tributary, the Middle Fork Goodnews River and Middle Fork Lake, and Kukaktlik River and Kukaktlim Lake east of Goodnews Bay. If the recordable disclaimer of interest (RDI) is issued, it would mean the United States would no longer claim ownership of those submerged lands. The public may comment on the application until February 6, 2026, and the BLM will decide on or after April 7, 2026.
