Trucks no longer must carry spare fuses
Starting April 20, 2026, commercial motor vehicles (trucks, truck tractors, and buses) are no longer required to carry at least one spare fuse for each type and size. The rule does not forbid keeping spare fuses if operators want them, and spare fuses remain available at service stations, truck stops, and auto retailers. Small annual enforcement cost savings
FMCSA estimates about 9,000 roadside violations per year (years 2021–2024) for missing spare fuses. At an average price of $0.80 per spare fuse, FMCSA calculates a minimum annual savings of $7,200 from no longer requiring spare fuses, plus additional administrative and time savings for carriers and enforcement personnel.
FMCSA: no significant small-entity impact
FMCSA certified that removing the spare-fuse requirement will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities, so a full Regulatory Flexibility Act analysis was not required. FMCSA also offered assistance contacts for small businesses with questions about the rule.
