Two Native American Remains Eligible

If you are a member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians or a lineal descendant, two Native American human remains identified as affiliated with the Santa Ynez Band may be returned to the tribe. Repatriation may occur on or after May 11, 2026, and the remains represent two individuals with no known identity.

Who May Request Repatriation

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians, any identified lineal descendant, or another tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence it is affiliated may submit a written repatriation request. If competing requests are received, Case Western Reserve University must decide the most appropriate requestor before repatriation.

No Funerary Objects or Hazards Found

The inventory states there are no associated funerary objects with the two human remains and there is no known presence of potentially hazardous materials. This means there are no additional items identified for repatriation and no known contamination hazards related to these remains.
