Notice

Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is restarting a computer program that checks military records against VA education benefit claims to make sure veterans and servicemembers qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill and Post-9/11 GI Bill. This helps keep benefit payments accurate and fair. The program starts soon, lasts 18 months, and could cost nothing extra but ensures benefits go to the right people.

VA–DoD Computer Match for GI Bill

VA is re-establishing a computer matching program with DoD to verify eligibility for the Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty and Selected Reserve) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The match will check DoD personnel records against VA education benefit records for Veterans, servicemembers, reservists, and dependents who have applied for or are receiving these education benefits. The matching agreement is valid for 18 months from its effective date and will become effective a minimum of 30 days after publication in the Federal Register.

Personal Data Shared in Matching

The DoD will provide VA eligibility records that include Social Security Number (SSN), DoD Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier (EDIPI or VA ID), Date of Birth, Last Name, and File Identification Number for the matching process. These specific personal identifiers will be used to match and verify eligibility for the Montgomery GI Bill and Post-9/11 GI Bill.
