Self-Driving Trucks Get Flashing Light Pass from Feds?

Published Date: 4/15/2026

Notice

Summary

Aurora Operations, Inc. wants a 5-year pass to use flashing cab lights instead of the usual warning triangles when their self-driving trucks stop on the road. This change could also help other companies with similar trucks if they tell the government first. People have until May 15, 2026, to share their thoughts before a final decision is made.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Exemption to Use Cab-Mounted Beacons

Aurora asks for a five-year exemption to let Level 4 automated driving system (ADS) commercial trucks use flashing amber cab-mounted beacons instead of placing 3 reflective triangles or 6 fusees when stopped. The exemption would apply to Aurora and to other motor carriers operating Level 4 ADS-equipped CMVs that notify FMCSA in writing before operating under the exemption; comments on the request are due May 15, 2026.

Fewer Drivers Exiting Vehicles When Stopped

Aurora says using cab-mounted beacons removes the need for a human to exit a stopped truck onto the shoulder or traffic lane. That change could reduce how often drivers must leave their vehicles in traffic when Level 4 ADS-equipped CMVs stop.

Request to Cover Double/Triple Trailers and Tanks

Aurora requests that the five-year exemption allow Level 4 ADS-equipped CMVs pulling double or triple trailers and tank vehicles to use the cab-mounted beacons; current waivers do not allow those vehicle types. Aurora also notes its current fleet size (109 Class 8 CMVs) and expects more than 200 Level 4 CMVs by the end of calendar year 2026.
