Social Security Tweaks Disability Claim Records for Cloud Storage

SSA will disclose information to the U.S. Department of the Treasury to review payment and award eligibility through the Do Not Pay Working System to identify, prevent, or recoup improper payments when disclosure meets the requirements in 20 CFR 401.150(c). The new routine use for this disclosure is effective May 15, 2026.

SSA Will Track Messaging Choices

If you file a disability claim, SSA will record whether you opt in or opt out of electronic messaging. This change is part of the Electronic Disability (eDIB) Claim File and takes effect upon publication on April 15, 2026, with routine uses for disclosures effective May 15, 2026.

eDIB Records May Be Stored In Cloud

SSA clarifies that electronic disability claim records (eDIB) may be maintained in cloud-based services and at additional backup locations. This clarification is published April 15, 2026 and applies to the eDIB Claim File.

SSA May Share Info To Reach Claimants

SSA added a routine use permitting limited disclosures of information to third parties as necessary to reach claimants, beneficiaries, and others SSA has a business need to contact. The new routine use is effective May 15, 2026.

Providers' Tax IDs and Licenses Recorded

SSA expanded the categories of records to include information about medical examiners and providers such as tax identification number (which may include SSN or EIN), medical license number, and license expiration date. This change is part of the eDIB Claim File published April 15, 2026.

Provider Records Retrieved By Tax ID

SSA will retrieve medical examiner and medical provider records by name and tax identification number (e.g., EIN or SSN). This retrieval policy is part of the eDIB Claim File notice published April 15, 2026.

SSA May Share Info With Interpreters

SSA revised routine uses to permit disclosures to third parties (for example, interpreters or telecommunications relay system operators) when an individual involved with a request needs assistance to communicate because of a hearing impairment or language barrier. This change is effective May 15, 2026.
