Notice

Summary

Louisiana Energy Services, also known as Urenco USA, got the green light to use a special shipping container for transporting uranium with a bit more enrichment than before. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission checked the environmental impact and found no big problems, so shipments can continue safely without delays. This update helps Urenco USA move their materials more efficiently starting April 15, 2026, with no extra costs for the public.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Limited HALEU Shipments Authorized

The NRC granted Urenco USA an exemption to use DN30 transportation packages with 30B cylinders to ship uranium hexafluoride (UF6) enriched to greater than 5 but less than 10 weight percent U-235. The exemption is limited to approximately 40 to 50 cylinders during calendar years 2026 through 2027 for shipment to a single customer and involves no physical or design changes to the DN30 package.

NRC Finds No Significant Environmental Impact

The NRC completed an environmental assessment and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the exemption, concluding that transporting UF6 enriched to greater than 5 but less than 10 weight percent U-235 in DN30 packages with 30B cylinders (about 40–50 cylinders in 2026–2027 to one customer) would not cause radiation exposures to the public or workers that exceed regulatory limits. The NRC also concluded the package meets criticality safety requirements.
