Tribes Can Request Return of Remains

If you are a member of any of the listed Indian Tribes or a lineal descendant, you can request repatriation of human remains (one individual) and one associated funerary object (a charcoal sample) from archaeological site 5MN368 in Montrose County, Colorado. Repatriation may occur on or after May 18, 2026, and written requests must be sent to Natalie Clark, Deputy Preservation Officer, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado State Office, 2815 H Road, Grand Junction, CO 81506 or emailed to [email protected].

Who May Request and How Conflicts Are Resolved

Any one or more of the Indian Tribes named in the notice, or any lineal descendant or tribe not named who proves cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence, may submit a repatriation request. If competing requests are received, the Bureau of Land Management Colorado State Office must determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation, and joint requests are treated as a single (non-competing) request.
