Coast Guard Locks Down Miami Waters for World Cup Fans
Published Date: 4/16/2026
Proposed Rule
Summary
To keep everyone safe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Fan Fest in Miami, the Coast Guard wants to create a temporary security zone in Biscayne Bay. This means boats can’t anchor or hang out in certain waters near Bayfront Park unless they get special permission. The rule will be in effect from June 13 to July 5, 2026, and the public can share their thoughts by May 18, 2026.
Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Boaters cannot stop or anchor in Biscayne Bay
If you operate a boat in Biscayne Bay near Bayfront Park, you may not slow down, stop, or anchor in the designated security zone from 6:00 a.m. on June 13, 2026 through 6:00 a.m. on July 5, 2026 unless you get permission from the Captain of the Port Miami. Vessels forced to slow or stop because of mechanical failure or emergency must immediately notify COTP Miami on VHF-FM channel 16.
Coast Guard says small businesses won't be significantly harmed
The Coast Guard certified under 5 U.S.C. 605(b) that this proposed security zone would not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities because vessel traffic can safely transit around the regulated area and the rule affects a small portion of Biscayne Bay for about 24 days.
