NRC Eyes License Tweaks at Four Nuclear Power Plants

Published Date: 4/21/2026

Notice

Summary

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing requests to change operating licenses at four nuclear plants, including Catawba, McGuire, Salem, and Callaway. They believe these changes don’t pose big safety risks but include sensitive info, so special rules are set for those who want to review it. If you want to comment or get involved, act by May or June 2026—no big costs, just your voice!

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

NRC May Make License Changes Immediately

The NRC proposes that the amendment requests for Catawba, McGuire, Salem, and Callaway involve no significant hazards, and the Commission may issue and make any of these license amendments immediately effective before the end of the usual notice or comment periods (including before the 60-day wait and before the 30-day comment period in some circumstances). If the NRC makes a final no significant hazards consideration determination, any hearing would occur after the amendment is issued.

Special Process to Get Sensitive Info (SUNSI)

If you intend to be a party in the NRC proceedings and need access to Sensitive Unclassified Non-Safeguards Information (SUNSI), you must request access within 10 days of this notice (by May 1, 2026). The NRC will decide within 10 days whether you likely have standing and a legitimate need; if granted, access may require signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement, Affidavit, or Protective Order, and any contentions based on that SUNSI must be filed within 25 days after you receive access (with some limited calendar exceptions).

Public Comment and Hearing Deadlines

If you want to comment on these license amendment requests, you must submit comments by May 21, 2026. If you want to request a hearing or petition to intervene, you must file that request by June 22, 2026, following the NRC's filing rules.
