Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

New import access for glasswort

Starting April 21, 2026, fresh leaves and stems of glasswort (Salicornia europaea L.) from Israel may be imported into the United States for human consumption, subject to specified phytosanitary measures. This opens market access for importers and allows consumers to buy this product in the U.S.

Pet-food labeled shipments refused

Glasswort shipments that are manifested, labeled, or otherwise intended for pet food will be refused entry into the United States. Importers planning to import glasswort for pet food cannot use this human-consumption authorization and must expect refusal.

Phytosanitary measures and compliance required

Imports of glasswort from Israel must meet the phytosanitary measures identified in the risk management document (RMD) and listed in the APHIS ACIR database, and each shipment must meet the general requirements in 7 CFR 319.56-3. These measures are applied to mitigate the risk of introducing plant pests or noxious weeds.
