Stock Market Data Now Works Overtime: SEC Mulls Extension

Published Date: 4/22/2026

Notice

Summary

The folks who run stock market data plans want to keep their computer systems working longer each day. This change means the Processor will operate for more hours, helping traders get updated stock info outside regular times. No extra costs or complaints popped up, and the SEC is now deciding if this extended schedule gets the green light.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Market Data Processor: Nearly 24/5 Hours

The consolidated tape Processor would operate from 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) Sunday to 8:00 p.m. ET Friday, with a daily one-hour pause from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET on Monday through Thursday. The Operating Committee expects to implement the extended hours on December 6, 2026, subject to conditions such as DTCC clearing support and Processor readiness; holidays have special non‑operation windows as described.

How Off‑Hours Trades Are Reported

Transactions reported outside 9:30 a.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. ET will be designated with a ".T" to show they occurred outside normal market hours. Those off‑hours trades will be included in total trade volume for calculating net distributable operating revenue but will not be included in calculation of the daily high, low, or last sale; quote credits may be earned only for quotations sent during Regular Trading Hours.
