Gag Fish Season Gagged Early: South Atlantic Anglers Closed August 2026

Published Date: 4/22/2026

Rule

Summary

Because too many gag fish were caught by recreational anglers in 2025, the fishing season for gag in the South Atlantic will close early on August 2, 2026. This change helps keep fish populations healthy and ensures future fun fishing trips. If you love fishing for gag, plan ahead to avoid missing out between August and January 2027!

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Recreational gag season closes Aug 2

If you fish recreationally for gag in South Atlantic Federal waters, the 2026 recreational gag season will close at 12:01 a.m. local time on August 2, 2026 and remain closed until 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2027. Plan trips and bookings so you do not expect to harvest gag between August 2, 2026 and January 1, 2027.

Bag and possession limits set to zero

During the recreational closure in South Atlantic Federal waters, the bag and possession limits for gag are zero. That means you may not have or keep any gag caught from South Atlantic Federal waters from 12:01 a.m. on August 2, 2026 until 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2027.

Accountability measure triggered by 2025 overage

NMFS reports recreational landings of gag in 2025 were 187,751 lb, which exceeded the 2025 recreational annual catch limit (ACL) of 176,665 lb by 11,086 lb. Because the recreational ACL was exceeded, NMFS reduced the 2026 season length to prevent exceeding the 2026 recreational ACL of 220,030 lb.
