Civil Penalty for Failure to Report

If a junk or salvage yard subject to NMVTIS reporting fails to report required information, the agency may assess a civil penalty of $1,000 per violation. The penalty applies where an individual or entity meets the regulatory definition and the reporting requirement (e.g., handling 5 or more junk or salvage vehicles per year).

Monthly NMVTIS Reporting Requirement

If you run a junk or salvage business and handle 5 or more junk or salvage motor vehicles per year, you must report an inventory to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) on a monthly basis. You must report specific information within one month of receiving each vehicle; DOJ estimates reporting will take about 30–60 minutes per month for smaller operators, and there are 50,383 entities in the system of which 21,612 have submitted at least one report.
