Afghan Import Ban Extended to 2029

The U.S. is extending emergency import restrictions on certain archaeological and ethnological material from Afghanistan. The extension takes effect April 28, 2026, and the import restrictions will continue through April 28, 2029. Collectors, museums, and importers must continue to follow the existing restrictions; CBP says this preserves Afghanistan’s heritage and does not change fees or costs.

Which Afghan Artifacts Are Covered

The import restrictions apply to archaeological material of Afghanistan dated approximately 50,000 B.C. through A.D. 1747 and to ethnological material (including architectural and wooden objects) dated from about the 9th century A.D. through A.D. 1920. The designated list of covered categories is set forth in CBP Decision 22-04 and is available on the U.S. State Department website.
