Summary

The EPA is asking to keep collecting info about asbestos in schools and how people get trained to handle it. This affects schools, training programs, and anyone involved in asbestos safety. They’re giving the public until June 22, 2026, to share thoughts, with no new costs or big changes planned—just making sure safety rules keep running smoothly.

EPA Continues Schools Asbestos Reporting

The EPA is renewing its information collection for asbestos in schools and the Model Accreditation Plan so schools, states, and training programs must keep doing inspections, keep management plans, and keep records. The agency estimates 129,640 respondents, a total burden of 2,414,694 hours per year, and total annual respondent costs of $152,203,002.

Accreditation Required for Asbestos Workers

The Model Accreditation Plan requires states to adopt accreditation criteria at least as strict as the EPA model, and accreditation applies to people who inspect for asbestos, design or conduct response actions, and to labs that analyze asbestos bulk and air samples. These rules cover workers in schools and in public and commercial buildings.

Paperwork Burden Has Decreased

EPA reports a decrease of 185,985 hours in the total estimated respondent burden compared with the current ICR because fewer schools have friable asbestos-containing materials. This change is described as an adjustment to the burden estimate.
