Summary

Louisiana Energy Services, also known as Urenco USA, got the green light to use a special container to ship uranium with a bit more enrichment than before—up to 10% U-235. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission checked the environmental impact again and confirmed it’s still safe with no big changes. This update kicks in starting May 26, 2026, helping Urenco USA keep their shipments smooth and secure.

Temporary OK to Ship Slightly Higher Enriched UF6

The NRC approved an exemption allowing Louisiana Energy Services (Urenco USA) to use 30B cylinders inside the DN30 certified transportation package to ship uranium hexafluoride (UF6) enriched to greater than 5 but less than 10 weight percent U-235. The exemption is limited to about 40 to 50 cylinders for shipments in calendar years 2026 through 2027 to a single customer, and the NRC found no significant environmental impacts and that radiation exposures would remain within regulatory limits. The EA and FONSI are available on May 26, 2026.
