Repatriation of Two Native Remains

The Kansas State Historical Society identified human remains from at least two Native American individuals and 448 associated funerary objects recovered in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. KSHS determined these remains and objects are affiliated with the Kaw Nation, Oklahoma and The Osage Nation and they may be returned starting June 29, 2026; contact Dr. Nicole Klarmann at the Kansas State Historical Society to request repatriation.

Who May Request Repatriation

Repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in the notice, or by any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named that proves cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, KSHS will decide the most appropriate requestor, and joint requests are treated as a single request; repatriation may occur on or after June 29, 2026.
