ACRS Review Waived for Hatch Renewal

The NRC granted Southern Nuclear Operating Company an exemption so the subsequent renewal applications for Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. DPR-57 and NPF-5 (Edwin I. Hatch Units 1 and 2) do not have to be referred to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards under 10 CFR 54.25. The exemption is effective May 26, 2026; the licensee filed the subsequent renewal application on May 15, 2025 and a final NRC decision is expected on or before June 13, 2026.

NRC Finds No Safety or Environmental Risk

The NRC's safety evaluation found that the Hatch subsequent license renewal application meets the standards in 10 CFR 54.29 and did not identify any ‘‘truly novel or noteworthy’’ issues, so the exemption poses no undue risk to public health and safety and is consistent with common defense and security. The NRC also determined the exemption is categorically excluded from needing an environmental assessment or environmental impact statement under 10 CFR 51.22.
