HHS charges ~11% interest on overdue debts

If you owe money to the Department of Health and Human Services, overdue balances are charged annual interest at the rates certified by the Secretary of the Treasury: 11 1/8% for the quarter ended September 30, 2025; 11 5/8% for the quarter ended December 31, 2025; and 11 3/8% for the quarter ended March 31, 2026. These interest rates apply to overdue HHS debts until HHS publishes a revision.

How the HHS interest rate is set and exceptions

The annual interest rate on overdue HHS debts is set by the Secretary of the Treasury and cannot be lower than the Treasury's current value of funds rate or the applicable rate from the Schedule of Certified Interest Rates unless the HHS Secretary waives interest in whole or in part. A different rate may also apply if a statute, contract, or repayment agreement prescribes one, and the Secretary of the Treasury may revise the certified rate quarterly; HHS publishes any revisions.
