California State University, Chico identified human remains representing at least 22 Native American individuals that are culturally affiliated with the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria and the Mooretown Rancheria of Maidu Indians of California. Those remains may be returned to the identified tribes or to lineal descendants on or after July 6, 2026.

Who may request repatriation

Written repatriation requests may be made by the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria, the Mooretown Rancheria of Maidu Indians of California, any lineal descendant, or any tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that shows cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, Chico State must decide the most appropriate requestor, and joint requests are treated as a single request.

Where and how to submit repatriation requests

Written requests for repatriation must be sent to Michelle Hansen at Chico State, 400 West First Street, Chico, CA 95929, or by email to [email protected]. Repatriation of the described human remains may occur on or after July 6, 2026.
