EPA Sets Safe Limits for Pesticide on Sugarcane

Published Date: 6/15/2026

Rule

Summary

The EPA just set safe limits for a pesticide called pydiflumetofen on sugarcane to keep our food safe. Farmers, food makers, and pesticide companies should take note because these new rules start on June 15, 2026. If anyone wants to object or ask for a hearing, they have until August 14, 2026, so don’t miss that deadline!

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Tolerance set: pydiflumetofen on sugarcane

The EPA established a legal limit for the pesticide pydiflumetofen on sugarcane, setting the tolerance at 0.05 parts per million (ppm). This tolerance is published in 40 CFR 180.699 and is effective June 15, 2026.

EPA: exposure levels below safety limits

EPA assessed exposure and found acute dietary exposure to pydiflumetofen uses 9.0% of the acute PAD for children 3–5 years old and chronic exposure uses 29% of the chronic PAD for children 1–2 years old. EPA concluded there is a reasonable certainty of no harm to the general population and to infants and children, and reduced the FQPA safety factor from 10X to 1X.

Rule effective date and objection deadline

This final rule is effective June 15, 2026. Any objections and requests for hearings must be filed and received by the EPA Hearing Clerk on or before August 14, 2026, following the instructions in 40 CFR part 178.

Who may be affected: farmers and manufacturers

EPA states this action may potentially affect agricultural producers, food manufacturers, and pesticide manufacturers and lists NAICS codes 111, 112, 311, and 32532 as examples. If you fit one of these categories, the rule could apply to your operations.
