NRC Reviews License Updates at Four Nuclear Plants

Published Date: 6/16/2026

Notice

Summary

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing requests to update licenses for eight nuclear reactor units at four power plants. These updates are considered safe with no big risks and include sensitive info that needs special access rules. People affected can comment by July 16, 2026, and ask for a hearing by August 17, 2026, with some deadlines to request access to sensitive details by June 26, 2026.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

How to request SUNSI access

If you need the licensees' sensitive unclassified non-safeguards information (SUNSI) to prepare a contention, you must request access by June 26, 2026 (10 days after publication). Your request must describe the action, your name and address, your particularized interest, and why public versions are insufficient; the NRC staff will decide within 10 days and, if access is granted, may require a non-disclosure agreement or protective order. Any contentions based on SUNSI must be filed no later than 25 days after you get access to the information.

Amendments may be issued before hearings

The NRC has proposed that these amendments involve no significant hazards consideration (NSHC). Normally the NRC waits 60 days after this notice before issuing amendments, but it may issue them sooner and make them immediately effective if it finds the amendment involves no significant hazards consideration.

Public comment and hearing deadlines

You can file written comments on these license amendment requests by July 16, 2026. If you want to ask for a hearing or to intervene, you must file a request or petition by August 17, 2026 (60 days from publication).

Which plants and changes are under review

The NRC is considering amendment requests for Catawba Units 1–2, McGuire Units 1–2, Oconee Units 1–3 (applications dated March 24, 2026; ADAMS ML26083A340) and Fort Calhoun Unit 1 (application dated February 24, 2026; ADAMS ML26061A204). The Duke Energy requests would revise thermal-hydraulic/core methodology; the Fort Calhoun request would revise its License Termination Plan.
