Coast Guard Plans Ohio River Fireworks Safety Zone

Published Date: 6/24/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

The Coast Guard wants to create a temporary safety zone on the Ohio River in Cincinnati for a fireworks show on September 28, 2026, from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. This means boats and people can’t enter the area unless they get special permission. The goal is to keep everyone safe from fireworks hazards, and the public can share their thoughts by July 24, 2026.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Temporary Ohio River Safety Zone

On September 28, 2026, the Coast Guard would close a stretch of the Ohio River in Cincinnati (mile markers 457.5 to 456.5) from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Boats and people cannot enter that safety zone during those hours unless the Captain of the Port or their representative gives permission. To request permission, contact VHF-FM channel 16 or telephone 1-800-253-7465.

Small Entities: No Significant Economic Impact

The Coast Guard certifies this proposed safety zone would not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. The agency explains vessel traffic can transit around the small regulated area, the enforcement is only for a few hours when traffic is normally low, a Broadcast Notice to Mariners will be issued, and vessels may request permission to enter.
