Options Exchange Tweaks Quarterly Professional Order Checks

Published Date: 7/6/2026

Notice

Summary

BOX Exchange is updating how it reviews orders from 'Professional' traders—those who place lots of option trades but aren’t brokers. This change tweaks the quarterly checkup process to keep things fair and smooth. It kicks in right away and mainly affects these active traders, with no big money changes announced.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Monthly Review of Professional Orders

BOX Exchange shortened the review cycle so firms must change how they mark customers as 'Professional' within five days after the end of each calendar month instead of five days after the end of each calendar quarter. This rule takes effect July 1, 2026.

Faster Reclassification for High-Volume Traders

If you average more than 390 orders per day during any calendar month, your orders must be represented as 'Professional' for the next calendar month; that designation is applied on a monthly look-back going forward. Public Customer orders receive execution priority and are generally assessed lower or no transaction fees, so reclassified customers will lose those marketplace advantages.
