Summary

The government is updating and extending the approval of the Income Withholding for Support form, which helps employers take child support payments directly from a parent's paycheck. These changes make the form clearer and add new details to speed up payments to families. Courts, employers, and others involved in child support will see some updated rules starting after August 31, 2026, with public comments open until August 10.

Revised IWO speeds payments, cuts paperwork

If you are a parent in a child support case, the Income Withholding for Support (IWO) form was revised with clearer language, new checkboxes, updated links, and a daily pay amount field so employers can withhold correctly. OCSE estimates the ongoing annual burden across respondents is 520,955 hours and says the changes and more use of electronic IWO (e-IWO) have reduced that burden by 30 percent, which should help speed payments to families.

States must spend programming time to implement

State child support agencies will need to update their systems to accommodate the revised IWO; OCSE estimates 18 state programming respondents will each spend an average of 534 hours (totaling 9,612 hours). OCSE is requesting an additional one-year extension of the currently approved IWO to give states time to make these updates, and after programming is complete states will be required to use the revised IWO and e-IWO.
