NSF to Cross-Check Benefits Against Do Not Pay List

Published Date: 7/13/2026

Notice

Summary

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is starting a new program to check its benefit records against the Department of the Treasury’s Do Not Pay list. This helps stop wrong payments before they happen and recover any money already paid by mistake. The program kicks off on August 12, 2026, and runs through September 10, 2029, affecting anyone involved with NSF benefits programs.

Sensitive personal data will be shared with DNP

NSF will send and compare personal data elements—such as names, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), TINs/ITINs, Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), addresses, phone numbers, emails, and bank account and routing numbers—from its systems (NSF-13 and NSF-65 and related program records) with the Treasury DNP Working System. The matching system will return 'potential match' or 'no match' results and may prompt NSF to take follow-up actions.

NSF will check grant records against Do Not Pay

If you apply for or receive NSF federal funds from the programs listed in the appendix (e.g., programs using NSF-13 Fellowship Payroll and NSF-65 Electronic Payment File), your NSF records will be compared to the Department of the Treasury’s Do Not Pay (DNP) Working System to identify and prevent improper payments and to conduct any related recovery activities. This matching runs beginning August 12, 2026 (effective 30 days after publication) through September 10, 2029.
