Nasdaq Tweaks Halt Rules for Company News Events

Published Date: 7/13/2026

Notice

Summary

Nasdaq is updating its rules to better handle trading pauses when companies announce big news or changes. This affects companies listed on Nasdaq and traders who buy and sell their stocks, especially as Nasdaq moves to nearly all-day trading. The new rules make halts clearer and faster, helping everyone stay informed and trade smoothly without surprises.

Automatic Halts for Nine Corporate Actions

If you trade or own a Nasdaq-listed security, Nasdaq will require an automatic regulatory halt for certain issuer-related corporate actions. The rule explicitly lists nine categories (trading symbol changes; CUSIP changes; stock dividends equal to at least 25% of the Nasdaq Official Closing Price; forward and reverse stock splits; De-SPAC transactions; spin-offs; security-type changes; mergers/mandatory exchanges; and other issuer events Nasdaq determines appropriate).

When Halts Start and Trading Resumes

Under Nasdaq's nearly-continuous 23/5 Trading plan, mandatory corporate-action halts will be implemented after the Post-Market Hours and before the Night Session begins at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and trading in the halted security will resume at 8:00 a.m. ET via the Nasdaq Halt Cross (ahead of the 9:30 a.m. ET Opening Cross). Nasdaq also describes a one-hour daily pause (8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET) under 23/5 Trading.
