Waiver to extend brake-test distance

CSX Transportation asked the Federal Railroad Administration for permission to operate certain long-haul freight trains up to 1,785 miles before the next required brake test. The request applies only to trains running on approved routes that are equipped with wayside detectors.

Initial Class 1 test before departure

Under the petition, each affected train would still get a Class 1 brake test and a mechanical inspection by a qualified mechanical inspector before that train's initial departure. These inspections are required even if the train later travels up to 1,785 miles on approved, detector-equipped routes.
