Who May Request Repatriation

The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, Shawnee Tribe, The Osage Nation, and the Wyandotte Nation are identified as culturally affiliated and may request repatriation. Any lineal descendant or other tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that proves cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence may also request repatriation.

University Identified 22 Remains, 16 Objects

The University of Cincinnati identified human remains representing at least 22 individuals and 16 associated funerary objects recovered from three sites in Hamilton County, Ohio. These remains and objects are determined to be affiliated with the named tribes and are available for repatriation.

Competing Claims and Joint Repatriation Rules

If more than one party requests repatriation, the University of Cincinnati must decide the most appropriate requestor before repatriation. Requests for joint repatriation are treated as a single request and not competing requests.
