Published Date: 7/24/2026

Rule

Summary

On August 6, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Coast Guard will block off part of the Chicago River for the fun Annual Chicago Ducky Derby. Boats can’t enter, pass through, or park in this safety zone unless they get special permission. This keeps everyone safe during the event and affects boaters in the area for a short time.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Chicago River boating ban during event

You cannot enter, transit, moor, lay-up, or anchor in the main branch of the Chicago River between the Michigan Avenue Bridge (Mile Marker 326.5) and the Columbus Drive Bridge (Mile Marker 326.7) on August 6, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. Boats are barred from that safety zone unless the Captain of the Port Lake Michigan or a designated representative gives permission.

Must obtain Coast Guard permission

If you need to enter, move within, or exit the safety zone during enforcement, you must get permission from the Captain of the Port Lake Michigan or a designated on-scene representative and obey all lawful orders. If hailed by the Coast Guard by siren, radio, or light, your vessel operator must follow directions immediately.

Coast Guard may suspend zone segments

The Captain of the Port Lake Michigan may suspend enforcement of any segment of this safety zone for which notice has been given, which could allow boats to pass through part of the area during the event if suspension is announced.
