UTSA Finds Remains, But No Tribe Claims: Case Closed

Published Date: 7/31/2026

Notice

Summary

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Archaeological Research (UTSA-CAR) has completed an inventory of human remains and has determined that there is no lineal descendant and no Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization with cultural affiliation.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Who Can Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request to repatriate the human remains. The requester must show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or an organization with cultural affiliation before repatriation can occur.

No Cultural Affiliation Found

The University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Archaeological Research has determined the human remains represent at least one Native American individual and that no lineal descendant or Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization with cultural affiliation has been identified. Because no cultural affiliation was identified, interested parties must provide evidence to support any repatriation claim.

Competing and Joint Repatriation Requests

If more than one party requests repatriation of the remains, UTSA-CAR must determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation. Requests for joint repatriation are treated as a single request and are not considered competing requests.

How and Where to Submit Requests

Written requests for repatriation must be sent to Emily Moes at the Center for Archaeological Research, One UTSA Circle, San Antonio, TX 78249, or via the provided email address. Repatriation may occur on or after August 31, 2026, once a valid request is made and any competing requests resolved.
