NYSE Smooths Out Auction Imbalances with Quick Rule Tweaks

Published Date: 8/18/2026

Notice

Summary

The New York Stock Exchange is updating its rules to improve how it shares info about auction imbalances during Closing Auctions and to better handle special Discretionary Orders for certain stocks. These changes affect traders using the Exchange’s auction system and aim to make trading smoother and clearer. The new rules took effect right after filing on July 31, 2026, with no extra costs for users.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 4 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

More Order Types Included in Closing Imbalance

The Exchange changed the Closing Imbalance definition so it now counts MOC and LOC orders plus Closing IO Orders and, beginning 10 minutes before the scheduled end of Core Trading Hours, Closing D Orders. This gives market participants a more complete view of unpaired auction interest before the Closing Auction.

Earlier Cutoff for Cancelling D Orders

The Exchange will reject requests to cancel, cancel-and-replace, or modify Closing D Orders and D Orders beginning one minute before the scheduled close of trading (previously such cancellations were rejected beginning 10 seconds before close). Requests to enter Closing D Orders or D Orders will still be rejected beginning 10 seconds before the scheduled close.

No More D Orders for UTP Securities

The Exchange will no longer accept Opening or Closing D Orders in UTP Securities and removed the rule text that converted such D Orders for routing to the primary listing market. Floor brokers who want routing to the primary market for UTP Securities must send MOO, LOO, MOC, or LOC orders directly.

No Extra Costs for Users Stated

The filing states the changes took effect upon filing on July 31, 2026 and notes there are no extra costs for users in connection with these rule changes. This means the Exchange indicated these amendments will not add fees for users as part of the filed change.
