College to Repatriate 17 Artifact Boxes

If you are a member of a Native American tribe connected to Antelope Valley, Antelope Valley College plans to return 17 boxes of flaked and ground stone artifacts from the Lovejoy Springs site. The repatriation may occur on or after October 9, 2026, and questions can be sent to Dr. Darcy L. Wiewall at Antelope Valley College, Department of Anthropology.

Who Can Request Repatriation

Lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations may submit written requests for repatriation and must show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated or lineal descendants. Repatriation to a requestor may occur on or after October 9, 2026; competing requests will be resolved by Antelope Valley College and joint requests are treated as a single request.

College Affirms San Manuel Nation Affiliation

Antelope Valley College has determined there is a reasonable connection between the cultural items and the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation (previously listed as San Manuel Band of Mission Indians). AVC also determined the items meet the definition of objects of cultural patrimony with ongoing historical, traditional, or cultural importance to the Native American group.
