Named Tribes Have Cultural Affiliation

The Department of the Army determined that the human remains of one Native American individual are culturally affiliated with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. The agency based this connection on available information, consultation, and recognition of treaty rights under the Willamette Valley Treaty (1855).

Repatriation Eligible Starting October 16, 2026

Repatriation of the human remains may occur on or after October 16, 2026. Repatriation requests may be submitted by the named Indian Tribes, a lineal descendant, or another tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence cultural affiliation; send written requests to Ms. Mary Schmidt, Department of the Army, 101 Army Pentagon, Washington, DC 20310-0101 (email provided in the notice). If competing requests are received, the Department of the Army will determine the most appropriate requestor, and joint repatriation requests are treated as a single request.
