Gilcrease to Return Two Baskets

The Gilcrease Museum intends to repatriate two objects of cultural patrimony — baskets (catalog numbers TL2026.11.50 and 71.721) — that the museum found to have a cultural affiliation with the Tejon Indian Tribe. One basket was donated in 2026 and the other was donated in 1995 and is described as Tubatulabal from the Kern River circa 1890. Repatriation may occur on or after October 16, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not already identified in this notice may submit a written request for repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, the Gilcrease Museum must determine the most appropriate requestor, and joint requests are treated as a single request. Requests must be sent to Laura Bryant at the Gilcrease Museum and repatriation may occur on or after October 16, 2026.
