FINRA Hits Pause: Traders Get Fee Holiday Till New Year

Published Date: 9/23/2026

Notice

Summary

FINRA is hitting the pause button on the Trading Activity Fee for three months, from October 1 to December 31, 2026. This means traders won’t be charged this fee during that time, giving everyone a little financial breather. This change affects anyone involved in trading activities under FINRA’s watch and kicks in right away!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Three-month trading fee holiday

FINRA will set Trading Activity Fee (TAF) rates to $0.00 for transactions executed from October 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, and monthly invoices for that period will show a $0.00 TAF assessment. FINRA estimates the TAF fees waived under this pause amount to approximately $160 million; normal TAF rates will resume for transactions on and after January 1, 2027 (with regular invoicing resuming in February 2027).

Whether customers save depends on pass-through

Many FINRA member firms commonly pass TAF charges through to other firms or to end customers; if a firm passes the fee through, customers may see lower charges during October–December 2026, but if a firm retains the fee savings, only the firm benefits. Members must continue to report aggregate trading volumes during the pause (per Section 1(b)(4) of Schedule A), and FINRA notes there may be minimal system adjustment costs for firms to reflect the temporary $0.00 rate.
