The National Science Foundation is bringing back a form that helps them track reports of sexual harassment and assault in organizations they fund. They want your thoughts on how to make this process easier and clearer before they get official approval to keep it for up to three years. If you’re involved with NSF-funded groups, this affects you, and comments are due by December 1, 2026.
Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Institutions must report harassment findings within 10 business days
If your organization receives NSF funding, the Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) must notify NSF's Office of Civil Rights via the online notification form within ten business days after a finding/determination or placement of a PI or co-PI on administrative leave related to sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, or sexual assault. Each notification must include the NSF Award Number, the PI/co-PI name, awardee contact details, type of notification, a description of the finding/actions, and reasons/conditions for any administrative leave; NSF estimates the form takes about one hour to complete. NSF plans to request OMB clearance for this collection for no longer than three years (OMB No. 3145-0249).
NSF will review reports to assess safety and project continuity
NSF will use the submitted notifications, in consultation with the awardee, to determine whether the awardee's actions adequately address the safety and security of personnel supported by the NSF award and whether continued progress on the funded project can be made. This use is part of NSF's consideration as it reinstates the information collection and seeks OMB clearance for up to three years.
