Interior renews survey on government rental housing data collection

Published Date: 10/5/2026

Notice

Summary

The Department of the Interior wants to keep collecting info through the Private Rental Survey, which helps manage government housing rentals. If you’re involved with these rentals, your input matters! They’re asking for comments by November 4, 2026, and this process won’t cost you anything but a few minutes to share your thoughts.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Property managers must provide rental data

If you are a property manager or for‑profit rental property owner, you may be asked to provide rental unit information using forms OS-2000 (Houses/Apartments/Mobile Homes) or OS-2001 (Trailer Spaces). Participation is voluntary, surveys occur once per respondent every fourth year (three or four of 16 regions surveyed each year), and the agency estimates 1,883 annual respondents, 3,539 total annual responses, with completion times of 6 minutes for OS-2000 and 4 minutes for OS-2001 (total annual burden 342 hours).

No out-of-pocket fees to respond

Responding to the Private Rental Survey is voluntary and the Department estimates no annual non‑hour (out‑of‑pocket) costs for respondents. The collection uses short forms (OS-2000 and OS-2001) and is intended to be completed in minutes.

Survey avoids higher taxpayer appraisal costs

The Department says that, if the Private Rental Survey were not collected, DOI and other Federal agencies would have to use professional real estate appraisals of private market rental costs 'at an increased cost to the taxpayer.'
