USTR keeps China tech tariffs rolling into 2027

Published Date: 10/7/2026

Notice

Summary

The U.S. is keeping its trade actions against China’s unfair tech and innovation practices in place after reviewing them. American industries that benefit from these actions asked to continue them, so the rules won’t end on their 2026 anniversaries. These actions could still change, but for now, they protect U.S. businesses from unfair competition and help keep innovation fair.

U.S. trade actions vs. China remain active

Two U.S. trade actions taken on July 6, 2018 and August 23, 2018 did not terminate on their four-year anniversaries and will remain in effect beyond July 6, 2026 and August 23, 2026, respectively. USTR received continuation requests (68 domestic producers and 18 trade associations for the July action; 57 domestic producers and 19 trade associations for the August action), and domestic industry representatives said the actions help them compete with Chinese imports, encourage domestic investment and production, and support reshoring of vital industries.
