Who may request repatriation and how requests are handled

Any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in this notice may request repatriation, and a lineal descendant or other tribe/organization not named may request repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are affiliated. Repatriation requests may be submitted to the Niles History Center and repatriation to an approved requestor may occur on or after November 16, 2026; if competing requests are received, the Niles History Center must determine the most appropriate requestor, and joint requests are treated as a single request.
