Exchange Rules Clarify Overnight Orders, Because Markets Never Sleep

Published Date: 10/21/2026

Notice

Summary

Cboe EDGX Exchange updated its rules to clearly explain when unpriced orders can be executed and to specify when Day Orders entered overnight or during queue time expire. This change helps traders understand how their orders work during off-hours and ensures smoother trading. The new rules took effect immediately on October 13, 2026, with no extra costs involved.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

No unpriced orders outside regular hours

The Exchange added text saying orders that do not include a limit price cannot be executed outside Regular Trading Hours (Regular Trading Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time). This applies across the Exchange’s extended-session framework (including the Overnight Trading Session and Post-Closing Session).

Day orders entered overnight expire same business day

The Exchange clarified that a Day Order entered during Order Acceptance Queueing Time (8:55 p.m. Eastern Time) or during the Overnight Trading Session (9:00 p.m. through 4:00 a.m. Eastern Time) will expire at the end of Regular Trading Hours on the same business day to which that Overnight Trading Session belongs. The change replaces the phrase "following trading day" to remove ambiguity for orders entered after midnight.

No new requirements or user costs imposed

The Exchange states the proposed amendments do not introduce new requirements for market participants, do not change operational handling of Day Orders, and do not impose burdens on intramarket or intermarket competition. The Exchange represents that the restrictions apply equally to all Users.
