Cboe Lets Complex Orders Wander Into the Simple Book

Published Date: 10/22/2026

Notice

Summary

Cboe Exchange is updating its rules to let complex orders with parts in different groups join the Simple Book, not just the Complex Order Book. They’re also allowing risk controls to be set for related groups of orders, making trading safer and more flexible. These changes took effect right away on October 9, 2026, and mainly impact traders using complex order strategies on Cboe.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Complex orders may Leg into Simple Book across related groups

Cboe now allows a complex order made of legs in different groups to Leg into the Simple Book (in addition to being posted to the Complex Order Book) when the Exchange has designated those groups as a related group. This applies only when the groups are processed by the same matching engine (for example, SPX and the new SPXO will be eligible to Leg, while SPX and SPXW will not). The filing was made on October 9, 2026 and the Exchange will announce which groups it designates as related via Exchange Notice.

Risk limits can be set and aggregated on related groups

The Exchange (and Users, when applicable) may set risk-control parameters on a related group basis and aggregate activity across products in a related group for Rule 5.34 checks. For example, a $1,000,000 notional contract volume limit set for a User could apply across both SPX and SPXO if those products are designated a related group. This interpretative guidance was filed on October 9, 2026 and applies when the Exchange designates groups as related.
