Alaska shifts unused Pacific cod to other fishing boats

Published Date: 10/26/2026

Rule

Summary

Starting October 26, 2026, some Pacific cod that catcher vessels using trawl gear won’t catch will be shared with smaller boats using hook-and-line or pot gear, plus certain trawl catcher/processors in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. This switch helps make sure the total allowed catch for 2026 gets fully used, benefiting fishermen and the fishing industry without changing the overall catch limits. The change lasts until the end of 2026 and keeps the Pacific cod fishery running smoothly.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Small hook-and-line/pot vessels gain 400 mt

If you operate a catcher vessel less than 60 feet (18.3 m) using hook-and-line or pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI), your sector’s 2026 Pacific cod allocation increases by 400 metric tons from 4,557 mt to 4,957 mt. This reallocation is effective October 26, 2026 through December 31, 2026.

Trawl catcher vessels lose 475 mt allocation

If you operate a catcher vessel using trawl gear in the BSAI, your sector’s 2026 Pacific cod allocation is reduced by 475 metric tons from 25,706 mt to 25,231 mt. This reduction is effective October 26, 2026 through December 31, 2026.

AFA trawl catcher/processors gain 75 mt

If you operate an American Fisheries Act (AFA) trawl catcher/processor in the BSAI, your sector’s 2026 Pacific cod allocation increases by 75 metric tons from 2,712 mt to 2,787 mt. This reallocation is effective October 26, 2026 through December 31, 2026.

Temporary reallocation keeps 2026 TAC fully usable

NMFS temporarily reallocates unused projected Pacific cod from trawl catcher vessels to sectors that can harvest it so the 2026 total allowable catch (TAC) in the BSAI can be harvested. The rule leaves the overall 2026 TAC unchanged and is effective October 26, 2026 through December 31, 2026.
