Exchange Adds a Start-Time Button for Stock Market Orders

Published Date: 10/30/2026

Notice

Summary

Cboe BYX Exchange is adding a new 'Start Time' order instruction to its trading rules, just like its sister exchange Cboe EDGX. This change helps traders specify when their orders should begin, making trading smoother and more precise. The update is effective immediately and affects anyone placing orders on BYX, with no extra costs involved.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Optional 30‑Minute "Start Time" for Orders

If you place orders on BYX, you may optionally set a Start Time in 30-minute increments for when an order entered before Regular Trading Hours becomes eligible for execution. Start Times must be set to a time prior to Regular Trading Hours, the earliest Start Time that will have practical effect is 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, and the latest permissible Start Time is 9:00 a.m.; the Exchange intends to implement this change on December 7, 2026.

Timing Limits on Certain Order Types Before Start Time

Certain order types will not be accepted before 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time or, if later, before an order's designated Start Time. The restricted categories are BYX Post Only Orders; Intermarket Sweep Orders (ISOs); BYX Market Orders other than those with a Time in Force of Regular Hours Only or Stop Orders; Minimum Quantity Orders that also include a Time in Force of Regular Hours Only; RPI Orders; and all orders with a Time in Force of Immediate-or-Cancel (IOC) or Fill-or-Kill (FOK). The Exchange's order entry window will continue to begin at 6:00 a.m.

Consistency With Cboe-Affiliated Exchanges

BYX is adopting the Start Time instruction based on the Start Time rule on its affiliated exchange EDGX so Members have consistent order handling across Cboe-affiliated equities exchanges. The Exchange states this reduces complexity for Members that access multiple Cboe-affiliated exchanges.
