100‑yard safety zone during tow
From November 6, 2026 through November 16, 2026, a temporary moving safety zone will cover all navigable waters within 100 yards of the S.S. UNITED STATES and all vessels involved in its dead ship tow. You may not enter that 100‑yard area during the enforced periods unless you get specific permission from the Captain of the Port or a designated representative.
Enforcement only during active transit to 12 NM
The safety zone will be enforced only while the S.S. UNITED STATES and towing vessels are transiting from the pier in Mobile, AL until they reach the U.S. Territorial Sea boundary, about 12 nautical miles offshore of Destin, FL. The exact dates and times the zone is enforced will be announced in advance by Broadcast Notice to Mariners on VHF‑FM channel 16.
Permission and contact requirements
No vessel or person may enter the safety zone without authorization from the Captain of the Port (COTP) or the COTP's designated representative. To seek permission, contact the COTP or representative on VHF‑FM channel 16 or by telephone at (251) 266-5888; those in the zone must follow lawful orders from the COTP or their representative.
